Cool roofs are roofing products that reflect more of the sun's rays than standard
roofing products. According to Energy Star, Energy Star qualified roof products can lower
roof surface temperatures by up to 100 degrees. This reduces the amount of heat
transferred inside the building and reduces the amount of air conditioning needed,
including a possible 10-15% reduction in air conditioning for the hottest hours
of the day.
According to Energy Savers, standard or dark roofs can reach temperatures
of 150°F or more in the summer sun. A cool roof under the same conditions
could stay more than 50°F cooler. Decreasing the roof operating temperature
may also extend the life of the roof.
Cool roofs are generally considered most effective in areas with longer periods
of warm weather that require significant usage of air-conditioners and other cooling
methods.

systems must meet the following specifications in order to be eligible
for HERO Financing.
- Roofing products, including liquid coatings, must comply with all mandatory measures of the current California Title 24 Code.
- HERO eligible roofing systems must meet Title 24 prescriptive measures and/or HERO approved Title 24 equivalent custom measures.
- For current California Title 24 Code prescriptive measures roofing products must at a minimum meet the solar reflectance and thermal emissivity requirements in the table below (See CRRC's Rated Product Directory at http://www.coolroofs.org). In the case of liquid roofing products, the overall final roof assembly or surface, with the product applied, must meet these requirements:

*"Aged" is the score for that product after it has been installed on the roof for three years.
- For HERO approved Title 24 custom measure compliance the roof must meet one or more of the following requirements
- Install a radiant barrier in the attic meeting the requirements of §151(f)2; or
- Buildings with at least R-30 ceiling insulation or
- Install R-3 or greater roof deck insulation above vented attic; or
- Provide 1 sq. ft. free ventilation area of attic ventilation for every 150 sq. ft. of attic floor area, and where at least 30 percent of the free ventilation area is within two feet vertical distance of the roof ridge; or
- Roof areas covered by building integrated photovoltaic panels and building integrated solar thermal panels and existing roof areas that have thermal mass over the roof membrane with a weight of at least 25 lb/ft² are exempted for this requirement as per Exceptions 1 and 2 to §151(f)12.
This Eligible Product can be financed over a period of 5, 10, 15, or 20 years.
