Air Source Heat Pump

Electric air-source heat pump, most commonly used in moderate climates like Southern California, operates by using the difference between outdoor air temperatures and indoor air temperatures to both cool and heat your home (Energy Star). When properly installed, an air-source heat pump can deliver one-and-a-half to three times more heat energy to a home than the electrical energy it consumes. This is possible because a heat pump moves heat rather than converting it from a fuel, like in combustion heating systems (Energy Savers). More efficient Energy Star models can save you 9% or more over standard models and 20% over what you currently have in your home (Energy Star). Because air source heat pumps are usually powered by electricity, the higher cost of electricity will need to be evaluated by you and your contractor. In addition, air source heat pumps become less efficient once temperatures go below 41 degrees and do not function well in areas with extended periods of sub-freezing temperatures without gas heating as a backup.
